An Elligo Elite Learning Series Presentation
Watch the news, scroll through social media, and listen to your colleagues chatting over the watercooler. It’s no secret: Artificial intelligence (AI) is booming. AI technology holds astounding and exciting potential for enhancing and accelerating almost every industry —including clinical research. But what can AI really do for clinical trials? What are the dangers of implementing this new technology in such a highly regulated industry?
“AI in Clinical Research: How to Maximize Efficiency and Patient Centricity,” an Elligo Elite Learning Series presentation, is a roundtable discussion on all things AI and clinical trials. Featuring AI experts and research leaders Michael Ibara, Pharm.D., Chief Data Officer at Elligo Health Research®, Paul Della Maggiora, CEO & CTO at Avallano, and Enrique Garcia-Rivera, VP of AI at Bullfrog AI, the conversation covered five intriguing topics: the current status of AI and research, what Bullfrog AI is working on, how Avallano is using AI to optimize protocols, the biggest way AI will impact research, the biggest dangers of using AI in research, and a Q&A.
The Current Status of AI and Clinical Trials
To begin the discussion, the panelists poll the audience with two questions regarding their level of experience with machine learning and AI as well as their thoughts on what generative AI will become for clinical trials. Then, Michael introduces the conversation topic by commenting on whether AI will become the next electricity and highlighting the importance of carefully marrying new technology with the highly regulated industry of clinical research.
Bullfrog AI’s Advancements, Efficiencies, and Observations
Enrique then digs into the work he and the Bullfrog AI team have been doing with generative AI technology, detailing how they make graphs from healthcare data and use AI algorithms to get insights from the graphs. He provides an example of this, describing their work with a client that monitored clinical outcomes over time for rare disease patients and how Bullfrog used AI to find features that can predict a clinical outcome. Enrique completes this section with an overview of the many other ways Bullfrog is using AI, from coding and document creation to document summarization.
How Avallano Is Using AI to Optimize Clinical Trial Protocols
What about Avallano? Paul then dives into the story of his company and AI, describing how they first broke into the technology and how their use of it has changed over time. He also provides examples, such as building a chatbot to help veterans find and access services. Lastly, Paul describes his current work with Elligo creating a chatbot to help researchers quicky access and understand a trial’s protocol features.
The Biggest Way AI Will Impact Clinical Trials
Michael jumps back into the discussion to remark that the most exciting promise AI holds for clinical research — currently — is reducing manual effort to increase efficiency. He gives an example detailing Elligo’s innovative work on RecordsConnectSM, an AI-powered program that takes unstructured medical records and harmonizes them so they can be easily analyzed with inclusion/exclusion criteria to match patients to trials.
The Biggest Dangers of Using AI in Clinical Research
As with any new technology, there are risks associated with developing and deploying AI programs. Each of the panelists offers their opinions on the biggest concerns of using AI in clinical research, with their answers ranging from security and privacy to protecting against bias and navigating regulator hesitation.
Q&A
The conversation ends with a question and answer session covering a variety of AI-related topics. They discuss other technologies besides generative AI, how the trajectory of what’s possible with AI has changed, specific privacy and security challenges of using AI in healthcare applications, and the importance of leadership having working understandings of AI.
